All 17 houses at Achimota School pay sentimental homage to the School’s own unique history and the struggle of a nation once called the Gold Coast, now Ghana. In fact, the houses in the School are the best summation of Ghana’s history.

AGGREY HOUSE

Aggrey House was named after one of the founding fathers, Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey. Aggrey House, one of the six boys’ house was the first to be built in the School, on the Eastern Compound. The House was formally called the King–Cock House and is the house closest to the Administration Block. Its house colour is red.

GUGGISBEG HOUSE

Guggisberg House was named after Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, the then governor of the Gold Coast and  a co-founder.  It is one of the boys’ houses on the Eastern Compound. The house colour is navy blue.

Gyamfi House was named after a former student, Gyamfi, a member of the Asante royal family who passed away while he was still in Achimota School. Gyamfi House is one of the boys’ houses on the Eastern Compound. It sits north-east of Guggisberg House and adjacent Cadbury House. The house colour is emerald green.

CADBURY HOUSE

Cadbury House, a boys’ house, was named after the world renowned cocoa products’ company Cadbury and Fry Ltd which had been the School’s benefactor for many years. Cadbury House is located on the west side of the Eastern Compound, behind Guggisberg House and next to Gyamfi House. Burgundy is the house colour.

Lugard House

Lugard House is a boys’ house on the Eastern Compound, west of Livingstone House and closest to the West Gate. It is named after Sir Frederick Lugard who was a soldier, a mercenary, an explorer and a colonial administrator. The house colour is sea blue.

LIVINGSTONE HOUSE

Livingstone House was named after the famous Scottish missionary explorer David Livingstone. Livingstone House is one of the six boys’ houses on the eastern compound of Achimota School. The second house from the Administration Block. The house colour is yellow.

FRASER HOUSE
FRASER HOUSE

Fraser House is a boys’ house originally known as House 12, was renamed after the first Principal, Rev. Alexander Garden Fraser. It was formerly the Administration Block and now, the largest boys’ house on the Western Compound. The house colour is bottle green

Kwapong House was named after Akora Professor Alexander Adum Kwapong, an alumnus and the first African Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon and former Vice Rector of the UN University, Tokyo. Kwapong House is one of two boys’ houses on the Western Compound of Achimota School. The house colour is mauve.

Kingsley House was named after Mary Kingsley, an English ethnographic and scientific writer and explorer. The house colour is yellow

Slessor House

Slessor House was named after the Scottish missionary Mary Mitchell Slessor. While she was in Calabar, Nigeria, she successfully fought against the killing of twins at infancy. Slessor House is one of the girl’s houses on the Eastern Compound. It is the last house en route to the Games Field and its colour is burgundy.

CLARK HOUSE

Clark House named after English missionary Mary Clark. Clark House was the first female house to be built on the Eastern Compound and closest to the girls’ gymnasium. The house colour is blue.

Ofori-Atta-House1l

Ofori-Atta House (formerly House 11) was named after Akora Dr. Susan Ofori-Atta (SOA), alumna and Ghana’s first female medical doctor. She was the sister of the first boys’ school prefect, Akora William Ofori Atta and daughter of Nana Sir Ofori-Atta, former Okyenhene or Omanhene of Akyem Abuakwa State. The house colour is green and located on the Western Compound.

Baeta-House1l

Baeta-Jiagge House (formerly House 17) was named after Akora Justice Annie ‘Baeta-Jiagge, alumna and the first woman lawyer and first female justice of the Appeal Court of Ghana and Judge in the Commonwealth of Nations. Annie Baeta Jiagge House is a girls’ house on the Western Compound with red as the house colour.

STOPFORD HOUSE

Stopford House (formerly House 18) was named after Robert Stopford an Anglican Bishop and school principal (1941–45). It was originally a boys’ house. It is located next door to the Dining Hall on the Western Compound. Like McCarthy House it was converted to a girls’ house and was called OAA House because Akoras played a major role in refurbishing it. It has been renamed Stopford House with purple as the house colour.

Atta Mills House was named after Akora President John Evans Atta Mills, alumnus and former President of Republic of Ghana (2009–12). The house color is gray.

Aryee House named after Joyce Rosalind Aryee, an alumna and founder of Salt and Light Ministries. The house color is pink.
